A great view from around a lake in Ibaragi-shi, Japan

There is an old saying " Traveling helps expand your experience", and I can't agree with it more.

In this video is a view from a lake located in Ibaragi-shi, Japan. The sun was ready to hide it light from the earth so that its wife, the moon, could came out to greet delegates from Cambodia, students from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia(ITC) and from Royal University of Fine Art(RUFA). In the attached photo below are delegates of Kizuna (bond) Project's delegates from Cambodia.

Bon Odori Firework

Every culture has their own value.

I don't know how to say how I felt at that time because it was my first time to see an amazing thing like that. After we danced, the fired was set on a letter-like firework. One of my Japanese friends also involved in setting fire on it.

Japanese Dance

Dancing is not merely a good way to do exercise to make your body strong, but it is one means through which we use in order to experience a new culture. As in this case, my friends and I danced on a Japanese festival called " Bon Odori.

1, 2, 3,... We dance,..1, 2, 3... We dance :)

I usually dance during the Khmer New Year, but this time I danced on a Japanese festival day. Even though my brother ( the dearest friend) Samrith and I danced clumsily, it was a very joyful experience. I hope that I will explore more about other people's culture. :) :)

The Best Memory Ever

He who lives at the present time always has a past, the past which was either bad or good. He who has a good memory always wants to remember it all the time.

In this video, I have selected some of the pictures I took while I was with my friends in Japan in summer 2012. The weather was a bit hot but nothing was a matter because we were enjoying a happy time together. We spent 10 days living together, traveling together, working together, and exchanging experiences with one another. You may say 10 days is a very, very short period of time, but I think it's long enough for us to strengthen our friendship; an eternal friendship. Since we are now apart-- I mean we are far way-- we are not able to meet each other so often like before, but we never forget each other. We still keep in touch with each other on such social media as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and the like.

For the theme song of this video clip, I have chosen a song titled "I wanna grow old with you" sung by Westlife. I hope that this song is somehow consistent with what we want to convey, and if it's not, I hope that you would not mind me at all.

Study Plan

To start with, I would especially like to elaborate on future goals for which I have longed in terms of my field my study, Social Work.

Firstly, with respect to the principle purpose of Social Work profession, the pursuit of the well-being of people, I have chosen to major in Social Work in the hope of making social change possible by means of advocacy.  Discussing in the scope of Cambodian context, I am convinced, through the practice of advocacy mechanism, social and environmental issues will be resolved more effectively and be heard attentively by the relevant bodies.  However, to achieve such a time-consuming goal and to simultaneously be skillful at advocacy, consciously I have to comprehend much more profoundly the knowledge of policy and its implementation, which is crucially important to be taken into account. Reading the SUSI program description, I am genuinely curious about how local grassroots activism and civic initiative are practiced in the U.S. in response to social and environmental issues, thus, of course, inevitably making me more deeply understand how effectively the federal government policies are implemented. Additionally, providing there is an opportunity for me, I will bring the lesson learnt back to put into practice in both classroom environments by discussing with friends and community activities by encouraging more people to involving social and environmental issues in my home country.

Secondly, concerning the scope of Social Work practice, particularly in policy level, having leadership qualities is the foremost goal I have been pursuing through theories in books and through practical experiences gained from the involvement in both class activities and community engagement. In order to establish the leadership skills, not only have I been exposing myself to in-class activities such as teamwork and group discussion, but also been taking part in public seminars and workshops frequently so that I can learn more from diverse individual leaders from civil society and governmental institutions. In this regard, I am of the opinion that the four-week academic residency will surely provide me with considerably more hands-on experiences regarding leadership by opening opportunity for me to meet with community leaders and representatives from non-profit organizations. Finally yet importantly, I am convinced the experiences gained during the program will give me more insight into how different between leadership practiced in the U.S. and in Cambodia is.

In terms of personal development, I aim for the enhancement of my interpersonal skills and of a deep understanding of cultural diversity. I do acknowledge that skills and knowledge having been learnt in class are considerably important. However, a potential person is not only adept at working, but is also required to communicate effectively with people and to be knowledgeable about how to behave in cultural diversity properly without showing any prejudice, stigmatization, and discrimination. By this reason, I really want to expose myself to diverse learning environment and to diverse groups of people so that I could learn more about all those differences. Therefore, I think it is the time for me to achieve my goals through the program so that I can put what I have learnt and understood into practice.

Teaching Reading Skill

In the attached lesson plan, I am going to teach reading skill to a group of young adults, aged from around 18 to 21 years old.  I am going to give a lecture on a reading passage titled “A brief history of space travel” which is in Theme 2, “Technology”, in student’s textbook. The reasons why I decided to choose reading skill to teach and how I will teach it will be illustrated as follow.

Amongst the fours main skills, reading is, in my viewpoint, the most important skill students need if they are to acquire and accumulate knowledge. In other words, knowing how to read, effectively and efficiently, students will be able to posses the other three skills easily.  In his book titled “An ABC of English Teaching”, Rhodri (1980) wrote students must have a reasonable command of the basic skills such as the ability to read, to write, to talk confidently and fluently, to listen if they are to play a full and useful part in the society when they leave school; and much of English lessons will be directed towards the acquisition of these skill through practice and through the creation of a sympathetic atmosphere in the classroom.   Owing to this reason, I have come up with an idea how to instill one of these skills, reading, in my students. The reading point I am going to teach will help my students to be able to do scanning, reading for specific information, which is the main objective of my lesson.  However, there are various techniques that can be used in order to achieve this objective, but I decided to choose only five main techniques for teaching this lesson, all of which are: (1) Matching, (2) Understanding Vocabulary in Context, (3) Guidance, (4) Answer to Questions, and last but not least (5) Comprehension Check.

Since the very beginning, after greeting the students and stating the objective of the lesson, I choose the first technique named “Matching” by giving the students a handout containing 15 words with 20 definitions, and then ask them, in pair, to match those words with their correct definitions.  This first technique is very useful for the students to understand the passage they are going to read.  Moreover, this technique is a starting point that ushers the students to the next technique called “Understanding Vocabulary in Context”.  In this second technique, I am going to give the students a short reading text with some missing words, and then ask them to complete those blanks with vocabulary in technique 1 so that it will help them understand the text they are going to read more clearly.  These two techniques I am choosing to use prior to reading of the text are based on what have been stated in three different books. Teacher who spend even a few minutes linking students’ background knowledge—that is, activating schema—to the text they are about to read improve their students’ understanding of that text (Parlinscar & Brown, 1984; Paris & Oka, 1986; Pressley, 2000).

Next, we move to the next step “While Reading”.  In this step, I am going to employ two more techniques, Guidance and Answer to Questions, sequentially.  As the names imply, these two techniques enable the students to have a clear idea about how to read and maximize their understanding of the text.  Several questions, in these two techniques, are to be given to the students as a blueprint to prompt and monitor their activities while reading.  After they finish reading and finding answers to the questions, I, as a teacher, will tell them to compare their answers with a person who sits next to them before checking the answers as a whole class.  After that, I am going to adopt one last technique called “Comprehension Check” in a Post-reading step.  The intention of applying this technique is to check how much the students understand the text they have just read. In this technique, students are asked to form a group of five, and then discuss wit their group members about the text based on the guiding questions I am going to give them in a handout. When they are discussing, I will walk around the class to make sure that my students are working on the exercise and to be approachable in case they need some help. Then, after they have finished the activity, one student of each group is supposed to share what they have discussed with the class. I seriously believe that this technique will help them a lot.

To sum up, the objective of this lesson will be achieved after scrupulously planning how to teach by adopting various techniques. All of the aforementioned techniques are well linked together, and all of them will ensure students’ understanding of the text. I believe that students will enjoy learning and actively get involved in the activities in the class. “Fail to plan means plan to fail.”
